What is rheumatology?
Rheumatology is the medical speciality for diseases of the joints, muscles, bones and immune system. Many of these conditions are silent early on — and can quietly damage joints and organs over years if missed.
Bones and joints affected by injury, fracture or mechanical wear — often treated surgically.
When the immune system attacks joints, muscles, skin and organs — treated with targeted medicines, injections and long-term care, without surgery.

Orthopaedic surgeons treat bones and joints damaged by injury or mechanical wear, often with surgery. A rheumatologist is a physician specialist who treats conditions where the immune system causes inflammation of the joints, muscles, bones and even internal organs — mostly with medicines, injections and long-term management, without surgery.
If you have joint pain with swelling, morning stiffness lasting over 30 minutes, back pain that improves with movement, unexplained fevers with joint pain or rashes, or a positive ANA/RF test — it is time to see a rheumatologist. Early treatment prevents permanent damage.
Not necessarily. A positive ANA can be seen in healthy people, after infections and in many conditions. What matters is the pattern, titre and your symptoms. Dr. Shukla specialises in ANA interpretation by immunofluorescence and will explain what your report really means.
RA cannot be permanently cured yet, but with early and correct treatment most patients reach remission and lead normal, active lives. Starting disease-modifying medicines early is the key to preventing joint damage.
Biologics are well-studied, targeted medicines. They are started after screening for infections such as TB and hepatitis, and are monitored closely. For many patients they are life-changing.
Bring all previous prescriptions, blood test reports, X-rays/MRI reports and a list of the medicines you currently take. Noting when your symptoms started and what makes them better or worse is very helpful.
